Chargeback alerts are early warning services that notify a merchant when a cardholder has disputed a charge with their bank, giving the merchant a short window to refund before the dispute becomes a formal chargeback. The main networks are Verifi and its Rapid Dispute Resolution service on the Visa side and Ethoca on the Mastercard side.
Why it matters
Alerts are one of the few tools that protect the chargeback ratio itself rather than just the money: a dispute resolved through an alert never reaches the count that programs like VAMP and the Excessive Chargeback Program measure, which is why merchants near a threshold treat alert coverage as insurance. The economics need managing, since every alert carries a fee and refunding everything indiscriminately turns fraud into a free product. Mature merchants pair alerts with fraud screening so the refund goes to genuine confusion while clear fraud still gets fought.
