Rapid Dispute Resolution, or RDR, is Visa’s automated rules engine, delivered through Verifi, that resolves eligible disputes with an instant refund before they enter the chargeback flow. The merchant sets the criteria in advance, such as a maximum transaction value, and any qualifying dispute is closed automatically at the point of inquiry. Because the refund happens pre dispute, the case never becomes a chargeback and never counts against the chargeback ratio.
Why it matters
RDR turns dispute handling into policy rather than casework. Instead of a person reviewing each alert, the merchant decides once where an automatic refund is cheaper than the fight, and Visa applies that rule in real time. For high risk and subscription merchants that face a steady stream of low value friendly fraud, that saves both the chargeback and the labour of contesting it. The trade off is the discipline every deflection tool needs: set the thresholds too wide and you refund fraud you could have won on representment, so RDR works best alongside fraud screening and clear evidence rules.
