Stripe told German businesses on 30 June that they will be able to sell inside AI interfaces later this year. Announced at Stripe Tour Berlin, the Agentic Commerce Suite makes products discoverable and purchasable directly inside AI assistants through a single integration. Businesses with US entities already sell to US customers through platforms including Gemini and Copilot.
The same announcement moved Stripe Managed Payments to general availability. Stripe now acts as merchant of record across 195 markets, taking on local tax, compliance and payment infrastructure on the merchant’s behalf. And Stripe Radar, which blocked over EUR 2 billion in fraudulent volume for German merchants last year, now defends against token theft, multi-account abuse, free trial fraud and pay as you go abuse.
The launch did not land in isolation. The same week, BBVA completed a live agent-initiated card transaction under Visa’s Agentic Ready programme. Agentic commerce has moved from pilots to product pages in under a year.
The buyer is an agent, and the seller of record is your PSP
Read together, the two moves scramble the assumptions payments risk is built on. Merchant underwriting prices a business on a human cardholder and a merchant who owns the transaction. An AI agent buying on a customer’s behalf breaks the first assumption. A PSP standing in as merchant of record moves the second. The abuse classes Stripe now names, token theft, free trial fraud and multi-account abuse, are the same patterns subscription merchants already fight in recurring billing.
One caution for this site’s readers: merchant of record products rarely extend to restricted verticals, and prohibited business lists still apply. Platforms selling AI companionship learned early how fast a new billing model attracts underwriting scrutiny.
Why it matters
If AI agents become a real sales channel, the underwriting file changes shape. Expect acquirer questionnaires to add agent-initiated volume share, intent verification and dispute ownership. Merchants with clean chargeback numbers and documented fraud controls will get access to the channel first. Everyone else waits at the gate.
